1969 saw the birth of the Art Printers at no 10 Lorne Street, Durban.
Amidst a difficult and unfavorable political environment Mr Gainchund
Ramdutt, saw an opportunity to provide a higher quality printing service to
his countrymen. So it was with a great deal of vision and an even great
amount of courage that Mr Ramdutt purchased his first printing press, a
1945 Heidelberg platten press.

Art Printers was a one-man operation. Mr Ramdutt, a Jack of all trades
performed the function of a salesman, compositor, printer and cutter,
administrating the business on a daily basis.

In 1978 the five Ramdutt brothers joined their father and purchased a
further four Letterpress machines and moved to Fountain Lane.
The combination of family values and an honest approach to business,
showed real fruit. With the quest of keeping abreast with modern changes
and technological advancement in the print industry Mr Gainchund
Ramdutt and his sons made there next move, purchasing the property at
73 Beatrice Street and began systematically upgrading the printing plant.
They purchased a one colour press, then a two colour press, then a four
colour press, finally purchasing a state-of-the-art five colour lithography
Press.

THE FOUNDER - MR G. RAMDUTT
Mr Ramdutt recalls “Every thing in those days was manual, printing was
a real craft, all our copy was set in hot metal type, and errors were costly,
this made precision imperative. The ethos of precision craftsmanship and
attention to detail remains at Art Printers fuelled by 60 years of proud
accomplishment.
